Merit System

The County operates under a local merit system of employment, meaning that hiring and promotions for regular positions are competitive, with equal opportunity, and are based on each person’s qualifications for the position. Employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, national origin, ancestry, religion, sex, age, disability, medical condition, marital status, pregnancy, sexual orientation, or veteran status. The County utilizes a state-of-the-art resume processing system and Internet job postings, ensuring online access to job opportunities.

Types of Employment:

Most positions in County service are "regular," meaning the appointee is employed on a continuing basis. Regular and seasonal employees can obtain permanent status when they have completed the time required for their initial probationary period. Permanent employees have a right to continued employment unless they are terminated for just cause or laid off. By contrast, temporary, per diem, and at-will employees may be released from employment at the discretion of the hiring authority. The benefit descriptions in this handbook generally pertain only to regular employees.
