The Probation Department works in conjunction with the court system and community leaders to respond to probationary violations within the County. The department’s mission is to assist the courts in holding offenders accountable for illegal acts against the county and its citizenry. They also offer offenders detention and residential services, rehabilitation, counseling and treatment programs.
Probation Officers work with convicted felons, at-risk youth, and other violators every day to aggressively curtail counterproductive and illegal behavior. A large part of their job is managing casework, monitoring offender behavior, and preventing the occurrence of new crimes. Probation Department employees must be organized, detail-oriented, and thorough in their investigations to increase efficiency, effectiveness, and consistency in case management. In support of efforts to reduce recidivism, the Probation Department works with citizens to educate and increase awareness in the use of preventive measures designed to decrease the number of criminal acts and incidents within their communities.
The Probation Department also organizes specialized units to concentrate on specific areas of the population, including high-risk juveniles and adults, drug users and distributors, gang members and gang recruiters, domestic violence perpetrators, the mentally ill, and individuals who evade warrants. These units work together with the District Attorney, Sheriff, Public Defender, Mental Health, County Schools, and community organizations to construct programs such as the Recovery Opportunity Center (ROC)and Computer and Technology Crimes High Tech (CATCH), and the Kids with Guns (KWG) protocol. These programs are designed to intercede and impede criminal activity at the earliest possible opportunity. The department’s success is attributable to its professional and dedicated staff members.
