The floater program is designed to give the employee the opportunity to gain work experience in a new position for which they may not typically qualify. This program enables supervisors to infuse variety into their employees work duties and roles. Variety is a key component retention and employee satisfaction. The program also fosters employee growth and broadens perspectives and skill sets.
Function:
The floater program is designed to give the employee the opportunity to gain work experience in a new position for which they may not typically qualify.
This program is an effective tool for broadening skills, raising employee morale, increasing job satisfaction, limiting retention problems and developing quality internal candidates. It also benefits the using department because the floater has prior knowledge of the County of Riverside’s policies and procedures.
What the supervisor needs to know:
The position which is being vacated must be held open for a minimum of six months. You may fill with a TAP employee, companion position, or redesign your department to reassign the duties.
Before the 6 month is up a decision must be made by the new department and your employee as to whether the new position is a fit for both. If the floater position is considered entry level the employee may be transitioned to the position with the approval of the HR Services Manager for the department and the TAP division. If it is higher than entry level, the employee will be required to redo their resume adding their new experience which will allow them to compete for the new position through regular county lists.
